The floral development and floral evolution of five genera of the Marantaceae and of Canna (Cannaceae)

Abstract: Duke University dissertation, 1981. Abstract: The goals of this study are: (1) to clarify the patterns of floral organogenesis and the homologies of the floral parts in the Marantaceae and Cannaceae; (2) to investigate the origin of mature floral forms in closely related genera through a study of allometric growth; and (3)to put forward hypotheses on the types of changes that have occurred in the floral developmental patterns found in the Marantaceae and Cannaceae. To these ends the patterns of organogensis and allometric growth were examined in the flowers of seven species of the Marantaceae (Ischnosiphon elegans, Pleiostachya pruinosa, Marantochloa purpurea, Calathea vinosa, Calathea lancifolia, Calathea leopardinia, Monotagma plurispicatum) and one species of the Cannaceae (Canna indica). A Wagner Tree was then constructed using characters drawn from the literature as well as those determined in this study.
