Help With Searching and Browsing

NC DOCKS Home is the starting point for the institutional repositories (IR) of Appalachian State University, Eastern Carolina University, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Use the bar at the top of the page or the drop down menu beside the search box to select only one university, otherwise ALL will search the entire collection.

HELP WITH SEARCHING - NC Docks uses a Google-based search of the full text of items in the collection.

  • “Quotation marks” will search for terms together as a phrase.
  • AND is assumed for terms without quotation marks.
  • NOT should be used to eliminate a term use – (minus symbol). For example “finance –government” retrieves records which use the word “finance” but eliminates those records with the word “government.”

HELP WITH SEARCH RESULTS - NC Docks provides a list of results displayed in Google. Results include full text works as well as records with only abstracts or brief descriptions.

  • Follow the title hyperlink to view each result.
  • After viewing results, if you initiate a new search from the results screen, you will actually be searching ALL of Google. To change your search, use the Back button to return to NC DOCKS.

HELP FOR BROWSE - Provides alphabetical lists.

  • BROWSE ALL lists items in alphabetical order and includes all documents. THESES & DISSERTATIONS includes only student work.
  • Titles alphabetical by the first word in the title. EXCEPTION – titles beginning with THE, A, and AN listed by the second word of the title.
