Abstract: Night of the Black Moon: Part II is the second part of an orchestral ballet that focuses on a paranormal story of witches seeking revenge by unleashing chaos into the world. It contains five movements, all of which feature some element of musical automation from a generated sequence of numbers. In this piece, I have explored methods of automating rhythm and meter through random number generation in order to remove the human element that could interfere with creating truly unbalanced rhythmic and metric passages. To create this composition, methods of using randomly generated numbers were developed that denied listeners ability to predict and perceive, and for musicians to perform accurately. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, in Night of the Black Moon: Part II, I explore other methods of sequencing musical elements. These methods include applying numerical sequences to harmony, rhythm, and metric groupings that are derived from melodic intervals. The numerical sequences are used as a way to generate new material from the old material. This thesis shows how these techniques were conceived and implemented throughout Night of the Black Moon: Part II.
