Abstract: This thesis attempts to correct the widely accepted critical theory that Hemingway's fictional women being to one of two opposites--angel or devil--and are therefore unrealistic caricatures instead of real women. On the contrary, the archetype of the dark woman who has mysterious knowledge and power over men not only links ail of Hemingway's women out is vital in his creation of "true" women, "true" in that they possess mythical mystery and power traditionally attributed to women throughout time.
