Abstract: My thesis is a critical examination of The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), the final novel of Tobias George Smollett. In an analysis of both its style and substance, I concentrate on both the form and content of this literary work. Divided into four chapters, the thesis first examines Smollett's unique fusion of the picaresque mode in an epistolary form. Though acknowledging Smollett's debt to earlier picaresque conventions, I emphasize his special innovation -- the multiplying of the one first-person narrators of his epistolary novel. Here, I assess the psychological advantage and the artistic effect of rendering single events through the subjective impressions of several distinct characters.
