Abstract: In illustrating a novel or play or poem, it is necessary to take two factors into account, the meaning the author has tried to incorporate in his work, and the ideas and feelings the illustrator projects upon the work. In the play, Paphnutius, by Hrotswitha of Gandersheim, these two factors can be separated more easily than is the case when an artist attempts to illustrate a work that is contemporaneous. However, because this particular medieval play is based on an earlier legend, the first factor is somewhat complicated, for the author's meaning incorporates ideas that were prevalent in the third century as well as her own of the tenth century.
