Abstract: One of the functions of education is the counseling of individuals in the selection of fields of work in which they will perform most effectively and in which they will be well adjusted. Many students registering for shorthand fail or drop out before the completion of the course for a number of reasons, one of which has been identified as the lack of the aptitudes and interests necessary to succeed in this type of work. According to a statement in the Tenth Yearbook of the Eastern Commercial Teachers’ Association, it is apparent that "many of those who are studying shorthand for vocational reasons lack the aptitudes, interests, and abilities required for this kind of work."1
