Abstract: This dissertation is concerned with the dysfunctional relationship between education as it is practiced and experiences in the postmodern world. The current educational paradigm embodies Cartesian notions of the supremacy of disembodied mind and of objective, universally applicable truth. The outcome of the widespread application of these principles to education is a hierarchically organized, certainty-oriented system that is focused upon the acquisition of fragments of information. Through this lens the reasons for the failure of innovative arts-based programs is examined.
