Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparability and accuracy of three differential item functioning (DIF) detection methods: the Mantel-Haenszel X2 approach, the IRT Unsigned Area approach, and the log-linear approach. Based on a review of the professional literature relevant to methodologies used for the detection of differentially functioning test items, two research questions were developed. The first research question addressed the comparability of the DIF indices derived using the three DIF detection methods cited above. The second research question addressed the accuracy of these three DIF detection methods. To investigate these research questions, both empirical and simulated test data were used.
