Abstract: The purposes of this study are to analyze Dickens' characterizations of Mr. Paul Dombey, Sr. , in Dombey and Son and Arthur Clennam in Little Dorrit; and to illustrate the critical possibilities of a theory of characterization which regards the methods of creating character as rhetorical strategies. I argue that Dombey and Clennam are uniquely complex characterizations in Dickens' work and that their complexity can best be demonstrated by examining the effects Dickens' use of three basic methods of characterization, have on our responses to them.
