Abstract: Procedures were employed over a period of six months to develop communication in three non-verbal, emotionally-disturbed children who displayed autistic types of behavior as described by banner. The children were institutionalized, and, at the beginning of therapy, ranged in age from five years three months to eleven years seven months. The oldest was a girl with a hearing impairment who had been diagnosed at age four as schizophrenic (autistic type), and the two younger subjects were boys. The basic therapeutic method utilized was operant conditioning using food and social reinforcement. Negative reinforcement was a firm “No,” or immediate cessation of an activity.
