Abstract: This is my story about educating social work students (and faculty) about poverty and privilege in the first and third worlds. The story is one of shared learning. Through this story, an intertwining of many stories, I share the experiences of students and faculty as we traveled to Mexico to learn about poverty, interconnection, and interdependence across the Americas. The story is also about the value of intense immersion experiences in maximizing student growth. The lessons provide a frame for expanding our ability to educate social work professionals on the impact of growing poverty, structural inequalities, and growing global interdependence.
