Abstract: Because of high divorce rates during the past several decades, a significant number of clients seeking premarital counseling are entering marriage in the context of having experienced parental divorce. Existing research indicates that adult children of divorce are at an elevated risk for divorce and marital distress. In this literature review article, the authors present recommendations for premarital counselors who work with couples in which one or both partners have experienced parental divorce. The authors base their recommendations on the existing literature that examines the attitudes and experiences of adult children of divorce.
