Abstract: The purpose of this book is to examine "the nature and function of ideals" (p. 1). Its central thesis is that ideals are important because of their capacity to guide thought and action in beneficial directions, and that ideals "play a positive and productive role in human affairs" even when they are unrealistic or unachievable (p. 1).
