Abstract: Objectives: To educate providers on the importance of postpartum gestational diabetes testing and improve screening rates for patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).Methods: This quality improvement project focused on postpartum adults diagnosed with GDM in their most recent pregnancy. The study conducted an educational presentation for the clinic providers to recommend adding a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) if the patient missed the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at their 6-week postpartum appointment. Data was collected and compared from eligible participants in the pre- and post-intervention three-month periods. Outcomes included ordered and resulted postpartum tests for GDM. Results: Of the 107 patients included in the project, 58% were Caucasian, 95% spoke English as their primary language, 72% were multiparous, and 58% were married. Data collection excluded ten patients for a prior diagnosis of diabetes type one or type two. Over both periods, only 31.8% of patients were tested for postpartum DM. In addition, 39% were tested during the pre-intervention period compared to 25% in the post-intervention period. Only three patients were identified as having elevated results and referred for further DM management.Conclusions for Practice: Patient adherence to screening remains dismally low regardless of the testing option. Despite widespread knowledge and education of providers, postpartum tests are consistently not ordered. Increased education for providers and patients and more convenient testing options may improve screening rates.
