Abstract: Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-75) published his first essay on film music during the Cultural Revolution, a time when all the arts in the Soviet Union were experiencing significant change. Film in particular was targeted because of its potential to carry propagandistic messages. Many film-related conferences were held, and among the most discussed topics was the new role of sound in the cinematic product.
