Abstract: This research examines the influential circumstances involved in the discipline decision-making process of school teachers at one predominantly Black high school and one predominantly White high school. I gathered data on teachers’ understanding and use of school discipline in addition to teachers’ perceptions of student misconduct and discipline in their school. The data reveals that teachers exercise discretion when they decide on an appropriate disciplinary response. Teachers’ race and gender may influence their discipline decision-making process. Black and White students tend to receive similar disciplinary consequences, but there are instances in which Black students face more punitive punishment than White students.
