Abstract: The observation of line, form, color, and light in nature is the main concern in this thesis of drawings and paintings. Of these four problems, light, an absolute force, is the moot important concern. In these landscapes and still lifes, light determines the illusion of depth by altering the appearance of line, form, and color. Claude Lorraine, an artist whose work involves problems of light has particularly influenced this thesis. He achieves an immensity of light and depth of space in his work. My observations of light, like Claude's, are of the movement of this force. Movement is observed in the direction of the sources of light and in the changes of tonality as the light passes through the landscape and still life. Such observations of movement of light are used to build the depth of space as shown in this group of paintings and drawings.
