Abstract: This study of the intonational patterns in selections of Ana María Matute and Juan Goytisolo was undertaken to see what the results would be. As the analysis progressed, it became more and more evident that these patterns were distinctive for each author and reflected two different temperaments, backgrounds and styles. One work of each author has been examined (Doce historias de la Artámila from Matute and Duelo en el Paraíso from Goytisolo) by studying three of the Doce historias de la Artámila and the first, middle, and last ten pages of the Duelo en el Paraíso, thus giving a representative sample of the total text. The procedure has been a quantitative linguistic approach in which the occurrences of intonational patterns have been counted and tabulated in terms of raw totals, then converted into percentages. The results indicate a consistency between intonational patterns and the thought and emotions of the authors. In this case, Ana María Matute and Juan Goytisolo show contrasting tendencies.
