Abstract: This thesis is a collection of poems, most of which were written during the past six months. They deal with both past and present experiences, attempting within the tension of their own form to render as accurately as possible these experiences, to set them straight, as it were, and in so doing discover their meaning and significance. In many of the major poems this is done through presenting a narrative or a dramatic situation; other poems rely on a more imagistic technique. In either case, the concern is with the symbolic significance growing out of a careful consideration and recreation of place, object, or event.
