Abstract: When the Civil War ended, the planter faced many problems. The physical and economic destruction to the South had necessitated rebuilding. The capital with which to accomplish this had either been destroyed or had fled the region. In addition, the labor base of the region— slavery—had been eradicated. These were the major problems which confronted the planter. Although North Carolina planters had differences, their enthusiastic support of Henry Clay they had in common. Most of them had been Unionists during the secession controversy.
