Abstract: Smooth floor surface materials are advertised and promoted mainly from the standpoint of their attractiveness and ease of maintenance. Except in technical journals, relatively little information is available on the skid resistance properties of floor surface materials for consumers to use as a criterion in selecting safe floor surfaces. This is unfortunate since much of the literature on housing for the aging and for families with young children repeatedly suggests the need for nonskid floor surfaces. It is an accepted fact that safe floors are not only important to people in these age groups but to people of all ages.
