Abstract: Each year hundreds of girls leave their homes and communities and register in the colleges and universities throughout the nation. Some of these girls remain in college for four years and are graduated while others withdraw along the way for various reasons. An interest in the causes of their success or failure led the writer to study a particular group to determine the factors that may influence persistence in college and to find the relationship of certain background factors to college success and the relationship of freshman standardized tests to college success. The group selected entered Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in the fall of 1943. Woman's College, an integral part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina, is located in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is a liberal arts college granting seven undergraduate degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, Bachelor of Science in Music, Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Bachelor of Science in Business Education and Secretarial Administration, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Bachelor of Fine Arts. 1
