Abstract: My first thoughts about writing this booklet were shaped by previous publications of my colleagues, particularly Exploring the Black Experience
series and the Idea Exchange on "Native Americans." I want to thank my co-workers at CABLE Head Start State Training Office for their advice and assistance on this publication, especially Kitty Eagle, administrative secretary, for her diligence in the typing of this manuscript and Jamice Ryan, editor, for her perseverance in the rush. For the methods used in researching this project I want to thank Dr. Bhabagrahi Misra, anthropologist and educator, who helped me learn how to understand and interpret a culture from within utilizing a humanistic perspective. Also I want to thank the friends and neighbors of my parents, Gene and Mattie Bailey, of Patrick County, Virginia, who have acquainted me with edge-of-the-mountains families. Especially I want to thank the Head Start staff people in western North Carolina who have provided me with information and resources. Their assistance has been invaluable. They work long and hard for little pay. They show insight and caring for the families with whom they work. They know that the children have the potential and the right to live a good life and preserve the rich and beautiful parts of their mountain heritage.
