Abstract: A cross-sectional test of the broad criteria of "stability" and "intransitivity" as proposed in motor stage theory was conducted to screen hypothesized developmental sequences within six body components of overhead serving in tennis. In addition, the effects of sex, experience, and age on the hypothesized developmental skill level of males and females in tennis serving were examined. Sixty male and female tennis players, ages 9-19, were videotaped performing seven trials of a forceful tennis serve. Two observers analyzed the videotaped tennis serves according to the actions defined in the hypothesized developmental sequences.
