Abstract: Corporal punishment is a highly emotional and often litigated issue in public schools. Constitutional issues have involved Eighth Amendment protection from cruel and unusual punishment and Fourteenth Amendment guarantee of due process. The purpose of this study is to provide educational decision makers with appropriate information, in order that they will be able to make sound decisions in developing school board policy regarding corporal punishment in American public schools.
