Abstract: The purpose of this study was to provide principals with a better understanding of their role in establishing developmental readiness programs by (1) examining the concept of developmental readiness; (2) examining the role of the principal as an instructional leader; and (3) establishing guidelines for principals as leaders in creating developmental readiness programs. Portraiture, a type of qualitative research, provided the basis for this study. Three principals who have given leadership to a developmental readiness program were interviewed to gain insight into their roles as leaders. The results of this study have been the development of guidelines for principals as leaders in establishing developmental readiness programs and are summarized below.
