Abstract: Reading instruction has fallen short of meeting one of its primary goals--fostering positive attitudes toward reading. While credence has historically been given to the role of positive attitudes in student learning, relatively little research has been undertaken which focuses on reading attitude. Although greater interest has been shown in attitudes toward reading during the last ten years, research in this affective area of reading remains less than that which has been conducted in the cognitive area. A number of factors were cited as influencing student reading attitudes, reading behavior of parents, availability of reading materials in the home, the value parents and peers place on reading, self-concept, teachers' attitudes toward reading, student interests, and classroom organization and instructional programs. This study examined the influence of teacher attitudes toward reading on the reading attitudes and reading behavior of their students.
