Abstract: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate maternal attitudes toward childcare responsibilities in families of low socioeconomic status. A secondary purpose was to determine whether maternal attitudes are as homogeneous in this population as several previous investigators have argued. The investigation attempted to determine if receipt of financial aid (AFDC), number of children, and maternal receptive vocabulary abilities would discriminate mothers on several different attitude dimensions related to childrearing responsibilities. The sample consisted of 75 low-socioeconomic-level nonwhite and white mothers of children between two and five years of age. Mothers were self-selected from the Health Department and Head Start Program in Raleigh, North Carolina.
