Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the personal and professional characteristics of the female elementary principal in the public schools of North Carolina. The backgrounds, qualifications, experiences, and career patterns of these women were examined and analyzed from the data collected. Questionnaires were mailed to the 279 women elementary principals who were listed in the Education Directory, 1982-83. Of the returned instruments, 229 or 82 percent were complete and used for statistical analysis.
