Abstract: This thesis consists of eight short stories submitted as part of the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree, the beginnings of a collection that aims to engage what writer Clare Beams calls “the living strangeness” of sensory experience, identity, and desire. In these pages, characters pass through churches and synagogues, living rooms and bedrooms, a museum, a theme park, and a station wagon that is also a pirate ship. Though the stories arise from “what if,” they seek to parse “what is”: the wonder and anguish of occupying a body and finding a place for that body in a world of sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and textures.
