Abstract: In each of these stories characters who are outsiders in their fictional north Louisiana towns search for truth and authenticity despite and because of the rigid social structures of their communities. In the first story, "On the Far Edge of Paradise," a twenty-one year old named Jonas leaves the isolated farm where his parents homeschooled him and tries to define himself apart from the insularity and strict religious values of his childhood. "I Passed Before Your Door" is the story of Carol, an eleven year old girl in the 1950's who feels she is neither an adult nor a child. Carol's desire to understand the grown-up world leads to disillusionment with her father and a new perspective on her mother. In "One Body" a Christian beauty pageant becomes a vehicle that allows a newly recovering addict to accept herself and alter another character's understanding of her life.
