I am a political scientist specializing in comparative politics. I study the origins and breakdown of political systems, electoral fraud and reform, the operation of democratic institutions, and political economy. Most of my research has focused on Latin America, but I also study the politics of industrial and post-industrial countries. My research has been supported by fellowships and grants from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (Fulbright commission), Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Social Science Research Council.
