Anatoly S. Miroshnichenko

I was born in Leningrad (USSR), which is currently known as Saint-Petersburg (Russia). I became an amateur-astronomer in 1973. In 1983 I graduated from the Leningrad State University (now the Saint-Petersburg University). I chose to specialize in observational astrophysics. My diploma thesis was devoted to a study of opportunities to detect supernova explosions in the Milky Way galaxy, where they have not been observed for over four centuries. In 1982 - 1999 I worked at the Stellar Physics Lab of the Main (Pulkovo) Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint-Petersburg, where I was doing observations at three observatories of the Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute (Almaty, Kazakhstan) with 1-meter telescopes and a two-channel photometer-polarimeter of the Pulkovo Observatory in a spectral range between 0.3 and 2.5 microns. I also did observations at the 6-meter Russian telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences located in the Northern Caucasus region. In 1997 I joined Prof. Karen Bjorkman at the Ritter Observatory of the University of Toledo (Ohio, USA) as a post-doctoral research associate and returned later to join their faculty. In 2005 I became an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and got promoted to an Associate Professor in 2011 and to a Professor in 2017. I teach astronomy courses at the introductory level and a more advanced course of astrophysics to physics students. My research interests are focused on early-type stars (hotter than the Sun) surrounded by circumstellar envelopes (Herbig Ae/Be stars, B[e] stars, Novae, high-luminosity objects, and classical Be stars) as well as on studies of fundamental parameters of stars (surface temperature, luminosity) and stellar evolution. I am always open to work with interested students and can offer a wide variety of research projects at all levels of preparation. Since 2011 I am involved in spectroscopic studies of stars using the 32-inch telescope of the UNCG's Three College Observatory located in the Alamance county.
