Abstract: Background Mental health disorders are prevalent around the world. Unfortunately, few individuals receive the psychiatric treatment they need, including health care employees. An individual’s attitudes regarding mental illness influence how they experience their emotional challenges and affect whether they disclose these symptoms and seek care. Healthcare employees must be educated and equipped with resources to cope with the challenges and pressures endured in their occupation. Purpose The purpose of this DNP project is to plan, implement, and evaluate a unit-based intervention to minimize stigma associated with mental health in healthcare system workers. Methods A 5- to 10- minute mental health reflection moment was added as a reoccurring agenda item at monthly staff meetings on an Ortho-Spine/Oncology unit. Topics included mental health literacy, mental health stigma, self-care, and organizational resources for mental health support. Informational flyers were posted throughout the unit and changed on a weekly basis. Stakeholders included the unit manager, hospital executives, and the hospital’s employee assistance program. Results The intervention was feasible and acceptable; however, there were no significant differences between pre-intervention (M =47.1, SD = 3.79) and post-intervention (M= 44.6, SD= 3.79) stigma scores; t (35) = 0, p = 1.00. Recommendations and Conclusion Mental health education interventions may help to slowly lessen stigma and change individuals’ opinions around mental illness. In the healthcare setting, increasing awareness of self-help for healthcare employees and educating staff about available mental health resources can create an opportunity for individuals to learn more about mental health. Healthcare leaders should take long-term responsibility when it comes to promoting the mental health of the healthcare workforce.
