Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Test of Communicativeness (TOC), a screening device for identifying differences among preschoolers' desire to communicate. Validity was determined by comparing the TOC scores of twenty-seven three-year-old children with: (1) teacher ratings of the child's desire to communicate, and (2) the number of initiative communication attempts made by the child in a day-care setting. Results provided evidence to support the validity of the TOC. A significant relationship was found to exist among TOC scores, teacher ratings, and the number of initiative communication attempts made by the child.
