Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the philosophy and content of the physical education activity programs, intramural programs and interscholastic programs in selected independent schools of North Carolina. A stratified sample of ten schools was used in this study. An attempt was made to select schools so that a viable cross section of programs and philosophies could be achieved. The literature reviewed in preparation for this study included material pertaining to guidelines for the planning and carrying out of interviews; organization, construction and administration of questionnaires; and the investigation of existing measuring instruments that are utilized in the evaluation of physical education programs. An interview was arranged with the headmaster and physical education director of each independent school to obtain valid and reliable information concerning the physical education programs. A questionnaire and check lists were constructed to expedite obtaining information concerning existing programs and were distributed to each physical education director at the conclusion of the interview. Additional information concerning physical education programs was obtained by means of observing various aspects of the physical education instructional classes.
