Abstract: People streamed from Europe driven to a new land by the lack of food and the lack of land, by the presence of peasant fears and the presence of racial and religious persecution, by the love of adventure and a plan for a richer life, by the hope for a more generous future and the dread of a continued oppression. It is conceded that most who wanted to come were poor or despairing, harrassed or discontented, but only the courageous and optimistic dared to come. Many others who chose to migrate could have continued to lead comfortable lives in Europe, but curiosity about America and confidence in its future influenced them to transfer.
