Abstract: An artist and a mathematician meet. The authors of this\r\narticle, one an art education professor and the other a\r\nmathematics professor, collaborated to conduct research\r\nas a team, examining perceptions of K-12 art teachers\r\nregarding art and math integration. Because of changes\r\nin education such as the implementation of the Common\r\nCore State Standards and the Every Student Succeeds\r\nAct, some educational policymakers, administrators, and\r\nteachers have expressed interest in integrated curricula\r\n(Davis, Sumara, & Luce-Kapler, 2008\; Franco & Unrath,\r\n2014\; Wexler, 2014). Recent research supports the positive\r\nimpact of visual art learning on students’ test scores. For\r\nexample, research outcomes from the Turnaround Arts\r\nInitiative indicated that the schools participating in the\r\narts initiative demonstrated a 22.55% improvement in math\r\nproficiency (Turnaround: Arts Creating Success in Schools,\r\n2016).\r\nIn this Advisory, we want to share what we have learned\r\nfrom our partnership and exploration of visual art and\r\nmath integration to help art teachers collaborate actively\r\nand efficiently with math teachers in their schools. Our\r\nproject started with real-world problems. As parents of\r\nschool-age children, we shared our concerns about changes\r\nin the math curriculum based on the Common Core State\r\nStandards and the uncertain status of art education in the\r\npublic school system in our state. Conversations about\r\nthese issues led us to devise an interdisciplinary research\r\nproject about art and math integration. Our collaboration\r\nenabled us to work together and expand our knowledge\r\nand understanding, sometimes beyond our comfort zone,\r\nand to find new ways of practicing our disciplines.
