The Effects of Care Plan Utilization on the Rate of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries

Abstract: Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) are a preventable, hospital-acquired conditions. As such, all care associated with their treatment is non-reimbursable, causing a significant financial burden to healthcare systems. By promoting care plan utilization and personalization with nursing staff, rates of HAPI’s on a surgical intensive care unit dropped 25% from the previous fiscal year. Only one HAPI occurred after project implementation. This leads to a reduction in pain and suffering felt by patients, prevents complications such as infection, prolonged length of stay, and death, and allows the facility to allocate funds to better address other community needs.
