Abstract: There is a deep and rich culture rooted in the South. It is unique in its nature from other areas of the U.S., full of a specific type of charm and pride. This culture is significant to explore and remember, both for its good and bad characteristics. Through a poetic medium, I have been exploring my own experience of growing up in the South, specifically in a small town. In these twenty or so pages of poetry, I discuss religion, family, language, and society. The poems paint a sense of place and personality. Beyond theme, the poems utilize various rhymes, rhythms, and forms. The purpose is not only to exercise these as tools, but also to seek out the natural structure inherent to the subject material. This collection is an exploration of southern culture through the intersection of language, rhythm, and experience.
