Binge-Eating Support Group for African American Women

Abstract: Background: The growing epidemic of obesity continues to surge among African American women. African American accounts for the highest rates of obesity across all demographics in the United States of America. Obesity is not only linked to an increase in disease and financial burden but is heavily associated with chronic stress. Acculturative and socioeconomic stress specific to the experiences of African American women may contribute to the onset and maintenance of obesity. In addition, binge eating episodes are often a sign of chronic stress and may further exacerbate obesity. Therefore, it is paramount to establish a binge eating support group tailored to meet the distinctive needs of African American women who are obese and report binge eating episodes.\nPurpose: The purpose of The Key Connections support is to identify stressors unique to African American women, provide evidence-based strategies to limit binge eating, and lower the prevalence of obesity among the population. \nMethodology: DNP student facilitated eight weekly sessions to discuss mindful practices, sleep hygiene techniques, health advocacy, whole food nutrition, and physical activity. \nResults: According to the survey, 83% (5 participants) reported a decrease in their binge eating score and perceived stress scale score, 16% (1) reported no change in their binge eating score and perceived stress scale score, and 50% (3) reported a decrease in body mass index (BMI)/ weight, 30 % (2) of the participants reported no change in, BMP/weight 16% (1) reported an increase in BMI/ weight. All participants reported that the support group sessions provided new information that would positively impact their health.
