Abstract: Wavelet analysis is applied to the problem of predicting hard disk failure by examining S.M.A.R.T. stat 1 , one of several measures of performance maintained by hard drives. Once the discrete wavelet transform is performed for each hard drive's data , computationally simple measures are taken on the detail coefficients of the transforms. These measures are then examined in aggregate to determine whether S.M.A.R.T. stat 1 possesses any indicator for imminent hard disk failure. The resulting analysis found no factors specific to any metric of the living or dead hard drive populations indicative of hard disk failure.
