Abstract: Wavelet analysis is applied to the problem of predicting hard disk failure by examining S.M.A.R.T. stat 1 , one of several measures of performance maintained by hard drives. Once the discrete wavelet transform is performed for each hard drive's data , computationally simple measures are taken on the detail coefficients of the transforms. These measures are then examined in aggregate to determine whether S.M.A.R.T. stat 1 possesses any indicator for imminent hard disk failure. The resulting analysis found no factors speciï¬c to any metric of the living or dead hard drive populations indicative of hard disk failure.
