Department Chair and Associate Professor, Elementary Education Director, Graduate Elementary Education Director of Instructional Technology, Teacher Education Programs. She has been employed in the UNCP School of Education since 2009. Dr. Mitchell earned a B.A in Art Education, with a History minor, from Lenoir-Rhyne College (Now Lenoir-Rhyne University) in 1992; an M.A. in Elementary Education from Belmont Abbey College in 1998; and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Teaching & Teacher Education and Development from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2008. She also has North Carolina Teaching Certification in Elementary K-6, Art K-12, and Reading K-12, as well as National Board Certification Early and Middle Childhood Art 2001-2011. Her teaching career includes teaching in South Carolina for the Allendale County Schools and in North Carolina for the Catawba County Schools, the Gaston County Schools and the Guilford County Schools. Dr. Mitchell has also supervised student teachers and taught methods courses at Appalachian State University, Belmont Abbey College, Gardner Webb University, Meredith College, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Mitchell's research focuses on Beginning Teacher Support, including a 2008 examination of teacher induction in 11 North Carolina school districts and Project PREP (Preparing and Retaining Education Professionals), a recent collaboration with 5 Sandhills' school districts that was funded by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. She continues her passion for the Arts by participating in local arts events and continuing to display and sell her artwork at the Ashe County Arts Council gallery in West Jefferson, NC. She also remains current in the field of Arts Integration and Instructional Technology through scholarship, service and teaching.
