Kevin Zwetsloot Ph.D

"My research focuses on investigating the mechanisms responsible for sarcopenia (the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength) and developing exercise interventions for the treatment/prevention of sarcopenia. Additionally, we are interested in mechanisms responsible for skeletal muscle recovery and regeneration after injury. More specifically, my laboratory investigates the role inflammation plays in muscle atrophy, as well as during recovery and regeneration after injury." - Dr. Zwetsloot

AMPK regulates basal skeletal muscle capillarization and VEGF expression, but is not necessary for the angiogenic response to exercise 2008 1633 -AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a metabolic fuel sensor that monitors cellular energy charge, while the vasculature is important for maintaining cellular energy homeostasis. Mice with muscle-speci?c inactive AMPK (AMPK DN) were used to invest...
Differences in transcriptional patterns of extracellular matrix, inflammatory, and myogenic regulatory genes 2012 616 Aged skeletal muscle displays increased fibrosis and impaired regeneration. While it is not well characterized how skeletal muscle fibroblasts contribute to these phenomena, transforming growth factor- b1 (TGF-b1) and Delta/Notch signaling have been ...
Effect of Bacrobial® Skin Cleanser on the Prevention of Muscle Cramps 2015 734 Anecdotal evidence supports the use of Bacrobial® skin cleanser for preventing muscle cramps; however, empirical evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether Bacrobial® prevents muscle cramping in the triceps surae. DESIGN: Randomized, double-b...
Effect of Cluster set Configurations on Power Clean Technique 2013 2749 The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of cluster set configurations on power clean technique. Ten male, recreational weightlifters performed three sets of six repetitions at 80% of one repetition max with 0 (P0), 20 (P20) or 40...
Effect of inter-repetition rest on ratings of perceived exertion during multiple sets of the power clean 2012 1919 The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of inter-repetition rest (IRR) on ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) in the power clean exercise in a multiple set protocol using peak power as an indication of fatigue. Ten resistance-trained mal...
Evaluation of Rhodiola rosea supplementation on skeletal muscle damage and inflammation in runners following a competitive marathon 2014 696808 Adaptogens modulate intracellular signaling and increase expression of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72). Rhodiola rosea (RR) is a medicinal plant with demonstrated adaptogenic properties. The purpose of this study was to measure the in?uence of RR suppl...
Fibroblast growth factor 2-stimulated proliferation is lower in muscle precursor cells from old rats 2009 881 In aged skeletal muscle, impairments in regrowth and regeneration may be explained by a decreased responsiveness of muscle precursor cells (MPCs) to environmental cues such as growth factors. We hypothesized that impaired responsiveness to fibroblast...
High Intensity interval training induces a modest inflammatory response in young active men 2014 966 (VO max). Serum samples were collected during the first and sixth HIIT sessions at rest and immediately, 15, 30, and 45 minutes post-exercise. An acute session of HIIT induced significant increases in interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis f...
IGF-I activates the mouse type IIb myosin heavy chain gene 2009 1625 No Abstract
Lower capillarization, VEGF protein, and VEGF mRNA response to acute exercise in the vastus lateralis muscle of aged vs. young women 2005 1033 In humans, the majority of studies demonstrate an age-associated reduc- tion in the number of capillaries surrounding skeletal muscle fibers; however, recent reports in rats suggest that muscle capillarization is well maintained with advanced age. In...
Lower capillary density but no difference in VEGF expression in obese vs.lean young skeletal muscle in humans 2006 820 Obesity is associated with lower skeletal muscle capillarization and lower insulin sensitivity. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is important for the maintenance of the skeletal muscle capillaries. To investigate whether VEGF and VEGF recept...
Lower skeletal muscle capillarization and VEGF expression in aged vs. young men 2005 1038 Recently, we observed that muscle capillarization, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein, and the VEGF mRNA response to acute exercise were lower in aged compared with young women. We hypothesized that similar age-related differ-ences in ...
Muscle precursor cells isolated from aged rats exhibit an increased tumor necrosis factor-a response 2009 711 Improving muscle precursor cell (MPC, muscle-specific stem cells) function during aging has been implicated as a key therapeutic target for improving age-related skeletal muscle loss. MPC dysfunction during aging can be attributed to both the aging M...
Non-passaged muscle precursor cells from 32-month old rat skeletal muscle have delayed proliferation and differentiation 2013 1470 Objectives: The systemic environment and satellite cell dysfunction have been proposed as important contributors in the development of sarcopenia and impaired skeletal muscle regrowth with ageing. In the present study, we investigated effects of seru...
Post-exercise skeletal muscle glycogen related to plasma cytokines and muscle IL-6 protein content, but not muscle cytokine mRNA expression 2016 1000 Objectives: The purpose of this study was to correlate post-exercise muscle glycogen levels with changes in plasma cytokine, and muscle mRNA cytokine expression and protein content. Methods: Twenty-four male runners (age 36.5 ± 1.8 years, ...
A randomized trial of fish oil omega-3 fatty acids on arterial health, inflammation, and metabolic syndrome in a young healthy population 2013 1790 Background: Long chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils (O3) are known to have beneficial effects on a number of vascular risk factors in at-risk populations. The effects of a highly bioavailable emulsified preparation on an overweight young adult ...
Skipping Has Lower Knee Joint Contact Forces And Higher Metabolic Cost Compared To Running 2019 258 Background: The health benefits of running based exercise programs are plentiful however the high rate of injury in these programs often reduces or eliminates exercise participation. Skipping has shorter steps, reduced vertical ground reaction forces...
Soleus, plantaris and gastrocnemius VEGF mRNA responses to hypoxia and exercise are preserved in aged compared with young female C57BL/6 mice 2006 1926 Aims: In humans, skeletal muscle capillarization and the vascular endot- helial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA response to acute exercise are lower in aged compared with young. The exercise-induced increase in VEGF mRNA has been proposed to involve hypoxi...
Ultrasonic assessment of exercise-induced change in skeletal muscle glycogen content 2015 1019 Background: Ultrasound imaging is a valuable tool in exercise and sport science research, and has been used to visualize and track real-time movement of muscles and tendons, estimate hydration status in body tissues, and most recently, quantify skele...
