Abstract: A phytochemical investigation into the species Eupatorium serotinum (Boneset), which is native to the mountains of western North Carolina, was conducted. The isolation of three secondary metabolites from Eupatorium serotinum was accomplished by a modified Kupchan method and various chromatographic seperations. Various standard and correlation NMR techniques were used to determine the identity of these compounds. The compounds discovered were 4-aromadendren-3-one, 7d-methoxy-4(14)-oppositen-1ß-ol, and germacra-4(15),5,10(14)-trien-1ß-ol. These compounds were newly discovered in Eupatorium serotinum, but all have been found in other species before. Two of these compounds have been found in various members of the aster family, of which Eupatorium serotinum is from, and may have use as biomarkers.
