Abstract: Pharyngitis is a common complaint seen in outpatient clinics, and patients are often sent home with antibiotics when not deemed necessary. The Centor clinical tool is an established, but seldom employed, resource to aid providers in decision-making and determining the likelihood of bacterial strep pharyngitis. The purpose of this paper is to describe a project conducted at 3 urgent care centers with a goal to decrease unnecessary testing and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. The intervention included implementing the Centor scoring tool when evaluating patients with complaints of pharyngitis. Results indicated that as Centor documentation improved, antibiotic rates decreased.
