Michael D'Angelo
Michael D'Angelo joins the faculty at UNCW in 2012 as a lecturer in jazz studies and drum set instructor. He has been involved with the UNCW Summer Jazz Workshop every year since 2003, as a student, staff member, and now faculty member. He is an avid performer in all aspects of percussion and musical idioms, including symphony orchestra, large wind ensemble, percussion ensembles, chamber ensembles, musicals, large and chamber jazz ensembles, commissions, solo concerts, and clinics.
In 2011, Michael was invited to participate in the Ravinia Festival's Steans Music Institute for Jazz, an invitation only workshop for rising jazz performers and composers with mentorship from David Baker, Rufus Reid, Nathan Davis, and Curtis Fuller.
While a student at the University of North Texas, Michael performed with the One O'Clock Lab Band, Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra (as a concerto soloist), Graduate Percussion Ensemble, and Two O'Clock Steel Band. Michael was a member of the One O'Clock Lab Band from 2008-2009 and received a Grammy nomination from the band's annual recording, "Lab 2009" for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. At Indiana University, he received personal mentorship from Distinguished Professor of Jazz Dr. David Baker and performed in his ensemble. He has performed throughout the United States and internationally, including the Modern Drummer Festival, Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the Ravinia festival, Carnegie Hall and Birdland Jazz Club in New York City, Conservatorie de Paris in Paris, France, Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, and ARICANA in Rosario, Argentina. Michael is a performing artist for Pearl Drums, Vic Firth drumsticks, and Mono instrument cases.
