Abstract: "Every day individuals pass by numerous species of flora without much consideration. They grow and change throughout the seasons, and some might even take pictures of these plants, but not much thought goes into the identification and significance of these subjects. North Carolina is one of the most biodiverse territories in the United States, but this biodiversity allows for a general ignorance of the dangers and presence of invasive species. To bring attention to these species, this project sees the combination of art and science with reference to historical botanical illustration practices. These prints shall mimic those of natural history artists such as Maria Sibylla Merian, Franz & Ferdinand Bauer, and Pierre Jean François Turpin. However, unlike these artists who often traveled around to find plants in different lands or record those of their own homes, the plants I wish to depict shall be those that while present in North Carolina, shouldn’t actually be here. These prints historically served as references for identifying and naming plant species so that scientists, explorers, and the general public could become more aware of the plants around them. However, unlike those artists, I shall be using ink made from the plants themselves. This is due to the fact that many invasive species, flora or fauna, are often simply encouraged to be exterminated. I’d like to see if one might be able to make use of some of these species, rather than waste tons of potential due to external factors of introduction."
